Bright sparks join Energex’s Sunshine Coast ranks

Energex crews and the company’s field staff have just received a boost with Energy and Water Supply Minister Mark McArdle and local MP Fiona Simpson welcoming two new apprentices to Maroochydore.
The apprentice Electrical Fitter Mechanics, Jordan Anstey and Steve English (pictured left to right), will learn all aspects of the region’s 11,000sqkm power grid.
Mr McArdle congratulated them and said the Newman Government is committed to honouring its election pledge to create 10,000 additional apprenticeships over six years.
“Well trained staff are an integral part of building a strong four pillar economy, which we promised Queenslanders we would grow,” Mr McArdle said.
“Working at Energex is much more than a job. It’s a career that requires a commitment to learn a fast-paced industry for the benefit of the people of South East Queensland.”
Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said each apprentice would come to understand how the power grid works, how to expand it and how to repair it quickly after wild weather cuts supply.
“This is a great career choice and one which is appreciated by the community. They will be keeping the lights on and doing some very important work," Ms Simpson said.
Mr McArdle said Energex apprenticeships were one of the most sought after jobs in Queensland and provided a bright career path for those who excel in the trade.
“Energex receives thousands of applications for apprentice positions because young job seekers know the electrical industry is one that everyone relies on every minute of every day,” he said.
“A trade in the electrical industry can also be a firm stepping stone into other industries such as mining, transportation and electronics.
“Furthermore many Energex apprentices have not only had successful careers within the company, plenty have established themselves in very senior management roles in organisations around the world.”
The new apprentices will now join more than 250 currently working for Energex.
