Employment opportunities booming on the Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast has become Queensland’s employment powerhouse, with the latest ABS data showing more jobs were created on the Sunshine Coast in the last year than any other region.

Treasurer Tim Nicholls said this was a sign of confidence in the local economy.

“The employment growth experienced on the Sunshine Coast in the year to February 2014 was more than eight times greater than the state-wide average,” Mr Nicholls said.

“There are 11,300 more people in work in the region than there were 12 months ago.

“The unemployment rate has also dropped 0.6 percentage points to 6.1%.

“This drop in unemployment occurred even though more Sunshine Coast residents have started looking for work, with the participation rate increasing by 2.9%.”

Mr Nicholls said this was a further sign of confidence and showed the Newman Government’s plan to grow a four-pillar economy was working after years of neglect by Labor.

“The Sunshine Coast is fortunate to have dedicated state representatives who are prepared to work with local businesses to grow opportunities in the region,” he said.

“The Government is determined to continue working so that we achieve our goal of achieving a four per cent unemployment rate and this means a focus on all regions, including the Sunshine Coast.”
