New pedestrian refuge at Yaroomba

Pedestrians will find it easier to cross David Low Way at Yaroomba with plans for a new pedestrian refuge.

Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said the new refuge would improve safety and convenience for pedestrians crossing David Low Way.

“There is still some final consultation to be finished over the design but the location is based upon feedback from the community about safety concerns in crossing David Low Way near Yerranya Row," Ms Simpson said.

"I've lobbied for funding to address this and I'm pleased to see the allocation to help address this problem.

“David Low Way carries more than 9,000 vehicles each day near this location and pedestrians can face difficulties waiting for gaps in traffic.

“To assist pedestrians crossing the road, a new refuge will be installed mid-way between Yerranya Row and Goongilla Street. The site has been chosen due to local demand and the necessary sight distance to assist visibility.

“This will allow pedestrians to cross the road in two stages and concentrate on traffic from one direction at a time.

“The refuge will reduce the complexity of crossing the road by allowing pedestrians to cross one lane of traffic at a time and reduce delays waiting for traffic gaps to cross.”

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is in the process of finalising the design for the new refuge and seeking feedback from local residents.
