Carers Week celebrates our dedicated carers
Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson is encouraging residents to acknowledge the hard work of local carers during Carers Week, which will be held from 12 to 18 October.
Ms Simpson said that half a million people in Queensland provide care and assistance to loved ones who need help with everyday tasks because of disability, old age or chronic illness.
“These exceptional people devote their time and efforts to make a positive difference to the lives of many Queenslanders and they deserve to be recognised and celebrated.
Ms Simpson said this year’s theme for the week ‘Take a break for carers’ reminded people to think about the tireless work being done by our carers around the clock.
She praised the work of United Synergies Ltd who provide a range of flexible support options to support for carers of people with mental illness and their families.
“United Synergies provide emotional and practical support services such as short-term, planned respite to allow the carer to take time out to look after their own needs,” Ms Simpson said.
“They provide opportunities for carers to connect with other carers and individual support and information on a range of issues.
“The Companions Program supports mental Health Carers by providing respite on a weekly basis and also helps adults with a mental illness to engage in their community.

Ms Simpson said the Queensland Government is committed to lowering the cost of living for carers by offering carers great savings at thousands of participating businesses across the state through the Carers Business Discount Scheme.
“The scheme provides discounts and special offers on a wide range of goods and services to Carer Business Discount Card holders,” she said.
“For more information about the Carer Business Discount Card scheme visit www.qld.gov.au/carercard or call my office on 5443 7995 for an application form.
Ms Simpson said that the Queensland Government has partnered with Carers Queensland to deliver regional events throughout the week.
