Road safety works start on Bradman Avenue

Pedestrians and motorists on Bradman Avenue in Maroochydore will soon benefit from road safety improvements at three intersections and a new pedestrian refuge.

Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said that the works will commence during the week beginning Monday 15 June and will improve safety and convenience for pedestrians crossing Bradman Avenue and for motorists turning right into Denna Street and Yinni Street.

Ms Simpson said the works would provide the following safety improvements:

A new pedestrian refuge on Bradman Avenue to the east of Yinni Street;

A dedicated right-turn lane on Bradman Avenue into Yinni Street;

Extending the eastbound right-turn lane on Bradman Avenue into Denna Street and installing a dedicated right-turn signal;

Modifications to the traffic island at the Bradman Avenue and Diura Street intersection to improve left turn abilities for motorists.

The works are expected to take about three weeks, weather permitting.

Ms Simpson said the Department had identified the need for safety works to address crashes that have occurred involving eastbound vehicles turning right from Bradman Avenue into Denna Street and Yinni Street.

Ms Simpson asked the Department of Transport and Main Roads to investigate the need for a pedestrian refuge in response to concerns raised by locals who were finding it difficult to cross the busy Bradman Avenue.

“In response to my request for additional pedestrian crossing facilities, the Department carried out pedestrian counts which showed a strong desire for pedestrians to cross the road in this area,” Ms Simpson said.

“A pedestrian refuge to the east of Yinni Street will greatly improve pedestrian safety at this location, especially for children, the elderly and people with a disability.”

“The Department has made some modifications to the original proposal after community feedback in an effort to reduce loss of on-street parking.”

Reduced speed limits and single lane closure will be in place for Bradman Avenue between the hours of 7am to 5pm while the works are underway.
