Simpson launches petition for Mt Coolum visitors

Visitors to our much-loved Mt Coolum National Park may have a shorter wait for the loo, thanks to a new petition launched today.

Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson today launched a petition to call on the Government to provide much-needed public amenities for the many walkers and climbers who pay a visit to our iconic Mt Coolum.

Ms Simpson said that the petition was in response to requests from local residents who had raised concerns about lack of toilet facilities and insufficient parking in the area.

“The Mt Coolum walking track is a hugely popular destination, both for local residents and for tourists,” Miss
Simpson said.

“But lack of parking and toilet facilities are having a negative impact on residents in neighbouring streets.

“Council has agreed to review car parking in the area to maximise use of the existing over-flow car park in the
road reserve and I am calling on the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to provide public amenities for visitors.

Ms Simpson said that there has been a significant increase in the number of visitors climbing Mt Coolum since the upgrade of the summit track in 2012.

“In 2012 we had an average of 5000 people per month to Mt Coolum and by 2014 that had increased to over 10,000 per month.

“To join the campaign to see facilities improved in the area, you can go on-line and sign the e-petition, or sign the paper petition at the mobile juice and coffee cart in the visitors car park.”
