While the LNP has committed to a $10 million project to roll out flashing school zone lights across Queensland schools, the Bligh Labor Government continues to dither.
Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads Fiona Simpson said Bligh and Labor’s announcement today of yet another trial into school zone signs showed the government was all talk and no action.
"Flashing school zone lights are not new — there have been signs located at schools in Ipswich and Hervey Bay for some time, while new lights have recently been installed by the Mackay Regional Council," Ms Simpson said.
"In the past Labor ministers have described the lights as successful in slowing motorists down but instead of committing to protecting Queensland school children the Minister has just announced another trial.
"A recent survey by AAMI showed that two-thirds of motorists admitted to accidentally speeding through school zones.
"We need to ensure that confusion about the time of day is removed from the equation and that school zones are as safe as possible for all school children.
"A LNP Government would install the new signs at more than 75 schools each year — the LNP is committed to improving school safety.
"The time for talk is over, the Bligh Labor Government needs to adopt yet another LNP policy and ensure that Queensland school children are safe."
