After 10 years of saving for their clubhouse extension, Mudjimba Surf Life Saving Club suffered a blow recently when it was discovered midway through the build that the old clubhouse roof had failed requiring urgent and expensive repairs.
However, the little club with the big heart reached out publicly and the community which they had protected for more than two decades gave back raising the $30,000 for the roof repairs within two weeks.
Now they hope they can finish the “bare-bone” upgrades with just a little more help.
President Darrin Edwards and building committee chair Kamen Burns said the response brought tears to their eyes. “Thank you to The Lestari Foundation, Twin Waters Residents Association, Fiona Simpson, and the many members of our community who made substantial donations,” Ms Burns said.
Mr Edwards said: “We don’t have pokies. We’re a small club and we’re focused on looking after people on the beach.”
Club Patron and Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson, who also donated personally to the campaign, said the time was now to get the work finished so the “gutsy” club could focus on keeping people safe on the beach.
“Let’s give them a hand and get this finished,” Ms Simpson said.
“There’s more to be done and while Club members don’t have a lot of money, they do have a lot of community spirit. Our community loves them for their care and commitment, and I think it is only right we give them a hand.”
With the roof repairs covered, now Mudjimba Surf Club have their eyes on finishing the fit out and upgrades to amenities and training areas toilets which were too far out of their reach as part of the current stage of works but are also necessary.

The funds will go towards:
– an upgrade to current amenities where they deliver immediate First Aid treatment to our beach visitors.
– fit out of the new training room, office, current lifesaving operations areas, and the new Youth space.
– an external (sun safe) shade sail for Nippers, and the community who use the Club.
