Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson has expressed anger and sorrow over the latest tragic death on the Sunshine Coast, amidst recent public concerns about alcohol fuelled violence.
“As a community, we are appalled by this tragedy and as a society we must do all that we can to stop it happening,” Ms Simpson said.
Ms Simpson said that an alleged offender had now been charged and the matter was before the courts who would determine the facts of the matter.
“No violence is acceptable but when incidents happen we want to see justice for the victims and appropriate consequences for offenders,” Ms Simpson said.
Ms Simpson said that she wouldn’t jeopardise the legal process by commenting on specifics of the current case. However the State Government has sought feedback on how to tackle the serious problem of alcohol-fuelled violence and a package of reforms resulting from this feedback is due to be announced next month.
“We are seeking to create the right solutions based on thorough research and consultation,” she said.
“Penalties are one significant issue but it’s time that as a society we discussed all the reasons for this violence and tackled it.
“As a society we have to come up with better solutions.
“We need to get the message out that violence is unacceptable and there will be tough consequences for offenders.”
