Buying local, saving local jobs is quite a tasty affair when you have the best seafood in the world at Mooloolaba Spit with more fishers selling direct to the public to stay afloat.
Since COVID-19 turned many businesses upside down, the fishing industry was particularly hard hit with the loss of exports and restaurant trade.
I talked with Heidi Walker of Walker Seafoods who said they lost about 80% of their turnover in the first three days of the pandemic hitting. They are now selling direct to the public.
Heidi said, “The best thing you can do is come down and see us at 23 Parkyn Parade and buy export grade Tuna, Swordfish, Mahi Mahi and support local.
“It’s going to keep 50 people employed and continue to run our boats and instead of Neil Perry eating the fish, we’ll be eating here on the Sunshine Coast.”
