Queensland and the Sunshine Coast had some of the worst long-term unemployed and falling apprenticeship numbers before COVID. I am working hard to deliver training that leads to jobs and connecting training to jobs and boost apprenticeship and training numbers through greater support.
The unemployment rates are more than just figures, they are lives. On the Sunshine Coast since last year more than 4,700 jobs have been lost and in the last month more than 1,600 people have lost their jobs. Andrew’s story featured on Channel 7 is replicated in many, many places as well.
I am working hard to change the training system to make it easier for people to get assistance for their training when they need to change careers due to COVID disruption. As the LNP’s Shadow Minister for Training I’d love us to be in Government so we can do so much more and slash the redtape which is blocking people getting timely and affordable training that links to jobs rather than frustration. Of all times, COVID should show that it’s time to transform the training sector so we people train for jobs not just for qualifications where there are no jobs.
